I used to be very sceptical about laser hair removal , I wasn’t really sure how it was done, if it really worked or if it would be worth it so I went for my consultation in May last year for more information.
This is my experience and advice, but results can be different for everybody!
What does Laser Removal do?
The laser uses heat to target the hair. The pigment in the hair absorbs the light of the laser. The heat destroys the root of the hair and cuts off blood supply to it so it is not able to regrow.
Unfortunately if your natural hair is blonde you won’t be a suitable candidate for this.
Where I went
I went to the Therapie Clinic in Athlone but there are Therapie clinics all over Ireland.
The consultation is free! Always good news.
The staff in there are so nice! Really professional and really helpful.
Does it hurt?
At the consultation they use the laser machine on a patch of your skin (depending on where you want the treatment) just to see how your skin reacts and to show you what it will be like.
At the time the machine they had felt like a tiny pinch, but once they finished the treatment area there was no pain or soreness. You wouldn’t even know you had anything done.
But recently the Therapie Clinic in Athlone have gotten new machines and there is no pain at all not even that tiny pinch! The machine uses a heat to target the hair so all you feel is a bit of heat on your skin. A gel is applied to the treatment area and then the consultant uses the machine to massage the area. With these machines the hair will grow back as normal so don’t worry if you see growth because this is normal with these machines, the hair will fall out of the follicle.
How much does it cost?
You can buy different packages depending on what areas you want to target, I will leave their current price list here –> Laser Hair Removal Prices
They often have deals on so you could get sessions for cheaper. It is normal to buy a package of six sessions.
I paid €400 for a package of six sessions targeting the underarm and bikini.
When you have a session done you wait six weeks till you go for the next. You can still shave in between sessions so don’t worry!
Have I noticed a difference?
I had my consultation on my underarm and even after the consultation I noticed the area they targeted was slower to grow back. This was with the old machine, I have been told growth may be normal with the new machines but the hair will fall out. They have the same results so don’t panic.
I had a holiday booked soon after my consultation so I couldn’t start treatments until a few weeks after I was home because of any sun damage to my skin so I didn’t start treatments properly until the end of July. I am going onto my fifth session now and I can really notice the difference. The hair doesn’t grow back at all in some areas and it grows slower. Also when it does grow back it is finer.
What do you do before a session?
The day before your session you shave the area of treatment. They say shaving the day before is better because if there is any irritation on the day of the treatment they won’t be able do it. So the day before allows your skin to settle.
Also you can’t have any tan on for your session. Yep as pale as the day you were born. So now you know my excuse for my paleness ha.
It is also advised to wait 3 or 4 days after a session before putting tan back on.
I have been told certain medications will also affect how the treatment goes and how it feels so you have to tell them if you have any medications in your system.
Would I recommend it?
I have been very happy with my results so far and I am glad it is something I have done. Although you buy the six sessions you may need to get more than this (varies for everyone) and you may need a top up session every six months/once a year (also varies) so it’s not just six sessions and you’re done, so bare that in mind.
I think it is 100% less painful than waxing!
I would advise if it’s something you’re interested in, book your consultation, it’s free and then at least you will know if it is for you.
Hope this helps and if anyone has any questions don’t be afraid to ask!
